Crisis Survival Strategies

Crisis survival strategies and skills are all about doing whatever works to help you get through any moment of crisis. They are the skills that you need to help you get through the situation without worsening it.

One way that you can manage a crisis is by calming each of your five senses.

Calm yourself with VISION:

♡ Buy beautiful flowers.
♡ Light a candle and watch the flame.
♡ Go to an art gallery.
♡ Look at nature around you.
♡ Go sit in the lobby of a beautiful old hotel.
♡ Walk in a pretty part of town.
♡ Varnish your nails.
♡ Go to a ballet or other dance performance, or watch one on TV.

Calm yourself with HEARING:

♡ Listen to positive music.
♡ Pay attention to the sounds of nature.
♡ Sing your favourite song.
♡ Him a smoothing tune.
♡ Learn to play an instrument.
♡ Call a helpline so that you can hear someone’s voice.
♡ Be mindful of any sounds that come your way.

Calm yourself with SMELL:

♡ Use your favourite perfume or lotions.
♡ Spray fragrance in the air.
♡ Put lemon oil on your furniture.
♡ Light a scented candle.
♡ Bake cookies, cake or breads.
♡ Smell flowers.
♡ Put potpourris in a bowl in your room.
♡ Walk in a wooded area and mindfully breathe in the fresh smells of nature.

Calm yourself with TASTE:

♡ Have a good meal.
♡ Drink some soothing tea.
♡ Treat yourself to a desert.
♡ Chew your favourite gum.
♡ Put cream in your coffee.
♡ Sample flavours in an ice cream shop.
♡ Suck on a piece of candy.
♡ Really taste the food you eat

Calm yourself with TOUCH:

♡ Take a bubble bath.
♡ Put clean sheets on your bed.
♡ Soak your feet.
♡ Pet your animals
♡ Hold and stroke your soft toys
♡ Put a cold compress on your forehead
♡ Brush your hair for a long time.
♡ Hug someone.

  1. I love this! I’ve never thought of calming each of the five senses when feeling in a crisis, but I can imagine that it really helps and I love all of the ideas here. I never used to buy flowers, but they do have a really good impact, as they’re so beautiful and add so much colour to a room. Great post xx

  2. I find I become really sensitive to sensory overload when I’m in crisis, it’s crazy. One of the things that makes a big difference for me is the house being clean and tidy, if my bed is made then I feel like I’m slightly more in control of my life. I also find having baths with lavender oil really soothing when things are rough.
