UK Lockdown And Mental Health

You probably already know that yesterday at 8:30pm, Boris Johnson announced that the UK was going into lockdown. He stated that there’s now only a few reasons that you are allowed to leave the house and that the police will have more power now.

If you didn’t quite catch what he was saying, here’s the only times you’re allowed to leave the house:

  • Shopping for basic necessities
  • One form of exercise a day
  • Medical need, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
  • Travelling to and from work (if completely necessary)

This will be a 3 week lockdown and then the situation will be reassessed.

I know that that is exactly what this country needs but I can also understand that this is going to be hard for people’s mental health, including mine.

As selfish as this may sound, the UK lockdown is going to be absolutely terrible for my mental health. I’m not good at staying indoors for too long. I need some kind of routine and system to my life.

For those of you know don’t know, I have borderline personality disorder (BPD) and I have been dealing with it for a long time now. One of the main things that I noticed helped me was going outside for a walk around town.

Being sat around indoors, with nothing to do has never been good for me. It makes me feel worthless and makes me question the point of my existence.

Luckily, I know this about myself so I asked on Twitter if anyone had some suggestions on what I could do to keep myself busy. As per usual, the Twitter universe came back with some great ideas so I’m going to share them with you.

  • Do some colouring
  • Watch for birds out of the window
  • Knit, crochet, sew or embroider something
  • Write a blog post
  • Follow a YouTube exercise video
  • Write a blog post
  • Film a YouTube video
  • Have an indoor picnic
  • Play a video game
  • Learn a new skill
  • Paint something
  • Meditate
  • Have a crazy dance party on your own
  • Write a poem
  • Watch a tv show or film
  • Open the windows for fresh air
  • Do your make up and hair
  • Take selfies
  • Keep a journal
  • Tidy your room

I know that it’s hard right now but please try to stay safe and stay as positive as you can.

The lockdown is really starting to take a toll on my MH >.< It's weird because I'm usually pretty much cooped up at home, and I only go out for grocery shopping or to the post office and for the occasional day out that's been planned way in advance, but for some reason, being forced to stay indoors is different! It's making me feel super stressed, especially since it's springtime and I was planning on trying to get out and about more in nature this year. Ugh, I know it's important to stay home but it still sucks. *hugs* We will get through this though! And posts like yours are going to be especially helpful to people who are feeling the same & need to find a distraction or something to cheer them up 🙂 Thankyou for sharing it, lovely! – Sarah x
