As we near the second half of 2021, it’s a great time to evaluate your habits and do a personal mid-year review. Are you on track to reach your goals? Are you being the best version of yourself? Is there anything you can do better?

You might be in a position with work or education where someone else will conduct a mid-year review for you. Whether you’re in this position or not, it’s always a good idea to review your year by yourself. You may see things that others can’t.

Why is a mid-year review worth doing?

A lot of people will set goals at the start of a new year and then never look back at them and see how they are doing. This is why a mid year review is important as it gives you to opportunity to make the second half of the year even better than the first. Even if you feel like your year is going perfectly, it’s still nice to look back and reflect.

We often find ourselves asking others what we can do to improve. We ask or friends, family and even strangers on the internet, but the person that we don’t seem to ask is ourselves. You are the only person who will be with you for your entire life, so you need to make sure that you’re happy with yourself.

So, at least to me, doing a mid-year review is important.

How to do a mid-year review?

The best part of a mid-year review is that it’s super simple to do and you can make it as quick or long as you’d like. Simply ask yourself these 3 questions.

  1. Where am I now?
  2. Where am I heading?
  3. How can I improve?

You can make the answers to these questions as simple or complicated as you’d like. Since it’s a personal review, you should make it worth for you by completing it how you want.

Where am I now? – This is all about looking at your current position. You want to reflect on how far you’ve come and look around at your life. A great way of doing this is by listing out all of your accomplishments. You can write do anything that you’re proud of no matter how big or small. Brag about yourself because you deserve to. Another great way is to write down everything that you’ve learned so far. Life lessons are important to note and remember.

Where am I heading? – This is the perfect time to look back at any goals you’ve set for yourself and see if they still suit you. Goals can change as we are always growing and evolving. Goals that you set at the beginning of the year might not be relevant to you anymore. They might need adjusting and that’s perfectly okay. The goals you had at the beginning of the year might not align with your current plans. This is also the perfect time to set new goals if you feel like you’ve reach the goals you originally set.

How can I improve? – This is my favourite part of a personal mid-year review. This is where you get to decide if there’s any adjustments you wish to make and start working out how to go about it. Look ahead for upcoming plans and events. Decide what kind of person you want to be in the future. Make steps to become a better you.

And that’s it!

As I said, you can make this as simple or complicated as you like. I personally like to make mine quite simple but also do into details so that if I look back at my review, I can understand what I was thinking.

So, will you be doing a personal mid-year review? What’s something that you can do to improve the second half of the year?
