6 Reasons To Read Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables is such a whimsical, feel-good story that you’d be completely missing out if you didn’t read it. It’s one of those books that I wish I had read sooner so I would have more time in life to read it over and over again.

Since I don’t have a time machine that would allow me to read Anne of Green Gables earlier, I thought I’d write a post where I tell you all of the reasons that you should read it, so you don’t miss out on the absolute job of Anne Shirley.

Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery was published back in 1908 but people still adore the story to this day. That itself encourage you to read it, but if you’re still not convinced, here are 6 reasons that you should read Anne of Green Gables.

The Power of Imagination

Anne’s imagination provides her with an escape during her most difficult time. It pushes her to try new things, encourage others and helps her have memorable experiences with her friends. When life disappoints Anne, her imagination is there for her, much to Marilla’s disapproval.

Hope and Positivity

Without mentioning any spoilers, life isn’t too plain sailing for Anne Shirley but that never stops her from seeing the best in every moment and always feeling hopeful. While reading Anne of Green Gables, you can’t help but see the world in a much more pleasant and beautiful way. Anne is always able to find beauty in day-to-day life which is the perfect way to make a reader smile.

“It’s been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.” ― Lucy Maud Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

Bosom Friends

The friendships within the story are so powerful and beautiful. Anne makes many friends throughout the books but the one friendship that shouldn’t be ignored is the friendship between Anne and Diana. The “kindred spirits” guide each other throughout the story and lead each other during their most difficult times.

Idyllic Setting

Anne of Green Gables is set in a small village named Avonlea which is based on the community that Montgomery herself grew up in. Avonlea is described so beautifully throughout the story and it’s almost impossible for any reader to not want to move there. The scenery sounds so wonderful and magical.

The Fashion

Clothing and style are very important to Anne from the very start of the book. Throughout the story, we hear all about what Anne has been wearing and the fashion trends she sees. It’s almost impossible to finish Anne of Green Gables without wanting a dress with puffed sleeves. Even though Marilla calls Anne ‘vain’ for caring about her clothing, the reader can’t help but fall in love with all the fashion too.

“It is ever so much easier to be good if your clothes are fashionable.” ― L. M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

The Comfort You Get From Reading

There’re so many reads to read Anne of Green Gables but honestly, the best reason is that while reading, you are filled with comfort and joy. Reading has a way of transporting you to a magical place and Anne of Green Gables does that just perfectly.

Now that you’ve heard all my reasons that you should read Anne of Green Gables, there’s only one thing left to do: get reading. If you’ve read Anne of Green Gables before then a reread is always a wonderful option too.
