Your home is your safe space. It’s a place where you can relax, refresh and rest. It’s also a place where you can socialise, prepare and plan. Honestly, your home is sort of your base, and it should be a place that you enjoy spending time in.

One of the best things you can do to your home is make it a place you want to be in. Fill your home with things that make you smile and places that make you feel glad to be alive.
We spend so much time in our homes so what better way for us to romanticise our lives than by making our homes feel special. So, here are some ways you can do just that.
Fill your home with cushions, blankets and other soft furnishings
One of the most important things about your home (at least in my opinion) is that it’s cosy. I don’t want to be walking around my house, feeling uncomfortable just to make it look a certain type of way. By filling your home with comfortable and cosy spaces, you’re much more likely to feel relaxed and safe. The best thing about soft furnishings is that you can find them in many different styles so you can always find something to match your home aesthetic. There are some lovely designs over on Etsy and many other small businesses have lovely designs worth looking at too.
Keep your favourite items in sight
We all have things that make us smile as soon as we see them. For me, it’s books and my favourite plushies. Since they are my favourite things, I make it a habit to leave those things on display. I don’t mean to dump them somewhere so they look like clutter. Instead, free up space on a shelf or display where you can have an area for your favourite things. I can guarantee that seeing your favourite things after coming home after a long day will help boost your mood.
Have your favourite books nearby
Okay, so this is kind of like the previous point, only this is more specific. If books are something that you enjoy, then a lovely idea for your home is to keep them around. It makes your home feel so cosy and welcoming. You can also write down some of your favourite book quotes to keep with your books. Something that goes along these lines too, is a book journal. You can keep a journal on your bedside table or your coffee table for you to grab whenever you want to write about books. Keeping a journal around always makes your home feel cosy too.
Keep your home organised
I know that keeping your home organised isn’t the easiest thing to do. We are constantly bringing things in and out of our homes. Sometimes it’s from too much online shopping, other times the postman is dropping off letters that just seem to be taking over. I’m not saying that we all need to turn into minimalists, but little declutters can help our homes feel nicer. Once you’ve gotten rid of that junk that you didn’t even want, finding a home for all of your things can make your home feel fresher and more welcoming. No one wants to walk through the front door to mess.
Get crafty with home decor
Making a decoration for your home can help add an extra bit of comfort. Seeing something that you worked hard to create can make you feel proud and accomplished. You can hang a drawing, paint on a mirror, embroider on your bedding, sew something, crochet a blanket, or absolutely anything else you want. The best thing about craft is that there’s no wrong way to do it so there’s something for everyone. You never know, you might even find a new hobby while trying to create home decor.
Shop secondhand
If you’re looking to get some new pieces for your home, try shopping secondhand. You can find some lovely pieces of furniture and you have the opportunity to rehome things instead of them heading to landfill. My favourite thing about shopping secondhand for home pieces is that you can often find pieces that other people have already enjoyed. This might not be something that everyone would look for, but I look for furniture with bumps and marks because someone has made their own memories with that piece. It can be fun to make up stories about what happened to the furniture in the past.
Find a signature scent
There are so many different scents out there so what better way to make your home feel magical than by finding a smell that you associate with your home. By lighting candles or spraying air freshener that smells similar, you can make your home fragrance more cohesive so that you instantly feel comfort by that scent. On top of that, coming home to a lovely scent really is wonderful. No one wants to be walking into their home to the smell of sticky food or sweat.
Cosy loungewear
When I think about my home, I think about throwing on my favourite oversized t-shirt and my fluffy slippers. I feel like it’s pretty common for people to wear pyjamas or loungewear around the house. Since we spend so much time in this clothing, why not invest in s lovely and cosy ‘house outfit’? You could buy a new set of pyjamas, some sweatpants, or an oversized t-shirt. By having a cosy outfit for around the house, you will associate your home with comfort which is exactly how a home should feel.
The most important thing to remember about your home is that it should be a place where you can feel safe, relaxed and cosy.
What sort of home do you want to live in? A house fit for royalty? A cosy den? A place for people to visit? Somewhere for your to recharge? Make your home what you want it to be and enjoy yourself.
